Sojourning Here—Citizen There

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” Matthew 25:13

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Oftentimes in college, students cram for final exams. This isn’t the best way, but sometimes it’s all they can do with the busy schedule they carry. If they don’t stay up, it’s almost impossible to keep up, so the have to cram. Have you ever done that? Jesus tells us to be ready for His return because it may happen at any time. Are you ready? If you read the writings of the Apostle Paul, you will learn that he wanted always to be ready for Christ’s return.

Paul was not a citizen of earth trying to get to heaven. He was a citizen of heaven only sojourning here on earth. And he was ready to go whenever God called.

ACTION POINT:
As you pray for His return, pray also: “Father, make me ready. Prepare my heart for the place You have prepared for me.”

Choices

"Choose today whom you will serve."
Joshua 24:15, NLT

As I write this, the people of the UK are voting for their next government. After months of debates, and persuasive speeches by the politicians, as men and women across Britain put their crosses on the paper and drop it in the ballot box they will have made their decision. All they can do then is to wait for the result and prepare to live with the consequences of that decision. (When you read this we will know the results!)

Every day we all make many decisions. Admittedly not all decisions are as significant as voting in a new government, but nevertheless all have their consequences to a greater or lesser extent. Which shirt or skirt we choose to wear or which cereal we choose to have for breakfast or which TV channel to watch will not be life-changing, but other decisions are.

Choices of employment, marriage partner, where to live, where to worship, where to go on holiday, and what car to buy all have an impact on our lives. The consequences of a wrong decision can be significant, far reaching and costly in terms of relationships and finance.

God has created each of us with a free will - that ability to choose and make decisions. The verse above comes from the account of the time when Joshua gave the children of Israel a choice to either follow after foreign gods or to follow the true God. As leader his decision was quite clear. He said ‘But as for me and my family we will serve the Lord’ (Joshua 24:15). How much we need men and women like that these days, who have the courage of their convictions, and speak and act accordingly.

Daniel was such a person. He made the choice between whether to be politically correct and pray to the king, or remain true to his convictions and pray to the true God, and face the consequences. His decision had significant consequences. He was thrown into a den of lions! But the end of the story is that Daniel was saved and God was glorified (see Daniel 6:1-28).

God chooses us, and calls us to come to Him (Romans 8:30). When we do He’s promised the help of His Spirit as our guide (John 16:13). So the Apostle Paul instructs the Church at Galatia, ‘Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives’ (Galatians 5:16). As believers we have the person of the Holy Spirit to help us with our decision making, in both large and small decisions. Not only can He help us make decisions, but He strengthens us, and helps us to live with the consequence of those decisions, however easy or challenging they might be.

Every day we have a choice whether to speak, walk and act in ways which are pleasing to God, or not. The choice is ours!

‘The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand’ (Psalm 37:23-24).

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to choose only to do the things which please You. Amen.

Prayer

Loving Father please bless my brothers and sisters in Christ all over the world. Strengthen those under attack and facing oppression. Mature those new to your family. Enlighten those who are facing doubt and uncertainty. Please bless your people today with peace. In Jesus' name I ask it. Amen.

Satan has a way of discouraging us by using unscrupulous and evil people to spread lies and false rumors about us. This often occurs when we are most effective in our discipleship. We must not let the criticisms of wicked people derail our efforts to please the eternal and almighty God!
Prayer

Please, dear God, silence the gossips, slanderers, and liars empowered by Satan to wound and maim me. Not only defeat what is evil, but please empower all that is good in my life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

A Taste of Heaven

A Taste of Heaven

"I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one — I in them and you in me — so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."
John 17:22-23, NIV

Many years ago, when I was a new Christian, I remember asking the guy who was trying to help me get to know God better “how can we know what heaven is like?” He told me that every now and then God gives you a taste of heaven. It was one of those little remarks that stayed with me.

Recently I was helping on a course at one of the Ellel centres. The group of us there that weekend turned out to be one of the most multi-cultural, multi-ethnic gatherings I think I have ever been in. There were people from all the social classes and many different church backgrounds too, and I wondered how it would all work out for the teaching and ministry with such diversity. There seemed to be so much negative comment in the press prior to the election about the difficulties of getting along together.

I’m sure you know what I’m going to say. God showed up and it was a great weekend. There was a particular time which touched my heart. The worship was being led by a new, young team, who’ve not had much experience, and yet we were all transported to the presence of God. At one point I opened my eyes and saw and experienced the unity and oneness there that day. There were Pentecostals, traditional Anglicans of many years and everything in-between, all lost in wonder, love and praise to our amazing God.

For me it was one of those ‘tastes of heaven’ that I’d been told about, and it reminded me of our scripture for today, which is what Jesus prayed for us all, just before He was betrayed to death. Sometimes we look around at the world, and even the Church, and wonder where the unity and oneness Jesus prayed for is. Well I found it that day. It’s when we come together in the presence of our God to worship Him.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the unity we have in You. May the world know more of You, and Your love for us, and want to share in that love. Amen.

A Depraved Diet

A Depraved Diet

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“And there was a great famine in Samaria: and, behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung for five pieces of silver.” 2 Kings 6:25

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A depraved diet was the mark in this day of famine, and a depraved diet is the mark in our day. Only today, we have a spiritual famine.

Today we're feeding on all sorts of depravity and filth. Do you know why millions of Americans are feeding on a depraved diet? Do you know why pornographic magazines are read by so many? Do you know why people are going to see these sick movies and so-called adult films? Why these dens of iniquity, these things they call night clubs, are filled with people? Because there's a famine for the Word of God. And anytime a man, a woman, a boy or girl is not properly fed, he will have a depraved diet.

ACTION POINT:
How do you change your diet and keep from doing these things? Not primarily by saying, “I'm going to be a good boy.” Load up on the Word of God. Feast on the honey, the milk, the meat of God’s Word.

2 Thessalonians 1:12

Today's Verse for 06/20/2015
We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. — 2 Thessalonians 1:12

Thought

I can't think of a more lofty goal for today than that the name of Jesus be glorified in what we do and say. But then Paul takes it a step further — that we find our glory by being identified with him! As the famed old hymn "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" says it, "my glory all the cross."
Prayer

Father of majesty and might, please help me as I strive to plan what my daily activities will be and then prioritize those activities so that my focus and passion are on bringing you glory in all that I do, think, and say. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

A Blessing for Fathers on Father’s Day

ViestiKirjoittaja Annukka » 21.06.2015 20:35

A Blessing for Fathers on Father’s Day

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in His ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord. The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, and thou shalt see thy children’s children, and peace upon Jerusalem.” Psalm 128

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
I am convinced that America’s families will not be changed until the dads in America are changed. The key is the father. God has given us a survival manual, and it begins with the father. He is to be a God-fearing, hard-working, worshipping man of God. He is to be bold, but he must also truly fear God.

What is the fear of God? Not a cringing dread of God, but love on its knees. And I am convinced that the man who fears God the most loves God the best.

Dads, your children need to see the fear of God in your life. I’ve made an observation of fathers. Do you know what makes a good dad? He is a man who is both strong and tender at the same time. Strong, but not afraid to hug, to kiss, to love, to speak softly and gently to the children.

ACTION POINT:
These children of yours are like olive plants round about your table. Dads, if you will do this, if you will put the emphasis upon your family, we are going to see good in this nation again.

A Good and Faithful Servant

ViestiKirjoittaja Annukka » 22.06.2015 20:14

Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International
A Good and Faithful Servant

“Well done, good and faithful servant”.
Matthew 25:21, NIV

I was struck recently, whilst attending a local church, by an outpouring of thanksgiving for one particular member of the congregation. This lady was quite elderly and she had served 57 years, caring for the under five’s whilst their mothers and fathers attended the service. She welcomed the children, hugged them, sang songs with them, played games and told them stories about the Lord Jesus. I knew how precious she was from my own grandchildren, who loved attending and felt completely safe in this ‘Aunty’s care.

This was the day she was retiring. Many testimonies and stories were read out from those who were now grown up, but who wanted to thank her for fond memories of always being there and the solid Christian foundation for which they were deeply grateful. Some of the testimonies were of those who knew how she had impacted them in giving their life to Christ at a young age. There were stories too from parents who spoke of this special ‘Aunty’ never missing a Sunday, being so dependable and who became an ‘Aunty’ for life.

As the bouquet was presented, Peter and I were deeply moved in our spirits by the faithfulness of one dear lady to a whole generation of young people growing up. We knew from our own experience just how much this consistency of character and obedience will have meant in forming those tender early years into trusting God. What an example!

As we drove home thinking of the fifty seven years of faithful service this deeply loved lady had given, we found ourselves thanking the Lord for every single person we know who gives faithful, uncomplaining and joyous service week in, week out and who can be totally depended upon in their role to be there. And then there are those who faithfully pray, faithfully give and faithfully carry out a myriad of tasks, often unseen and un-thanked.

The words from a much loved and famous hymn came to mind, and with it the comforting attributes of God our Father. ‘Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not, As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Whatever the role, or whatever our task, we can all be laying a brick of faithfulness on which God is able to build His Kingdom, and a whole generation can be profoundly impacted. I was convicted at this service about what the Lord says about faithfulness. I was impacted afresh that God was not so much concerned with our success as He was about our faithfulness. Was I bearing that hallmark of the character of God in faithfully carrying out my part in His Kingdom?

This brought me on to remember some words my mother taught me, which I never forgot, “It is not the qualifications you have, but the scars you bear that matter.” In other words, God is not looking for our abilities or successes but He is looking at what it costs us. He looks at faithful we are in things which may not have recognition, or seemingly do not matter to men, and things which are undertaken in the quiet unseen place, which bring no outward reward.

On this particular day, hearing about this extraordinary ‘aunty’, I thanked the Lord Jesus for all the people in our ministry, seen and unseen, who have given faithful, loyal service in the seemingly small ways, as well as the more obvious ways. Many have stood by their posts unwaveringly and have enabled thousands to receive God’s blessings. I also felt a deep gratitude for those who have been faithful examples in my life. How I treasure those memories.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I give You thanks today for faithful hearts who serve You consistently and fully in obedience, even when it costs them. Thank You for all I have benefitted personally from those who have been a faithful example and rock in my life. Help me, Lord Jesus, to be faithful in my life to what You give me to do, whether it is small or large, so that You can bless many through it. Amen.

When you think about the large cities of our modern world, what do you think about? Jesus sees them, and passionately yearns for the lost people in those great cities to be saved!
Prayer

Most holy and loving God, revive in us, your Church, a passion to reach the lost people of the world's great cities with the gospel and grace of your Son. In the name of the world's only true Lord and Savior, Jesus, I pray. Amen.
