Hungry Birds

"Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty”."
John 6:35, NIV

This year a robin built a nest in our garage, just by the door. I had to pass very close to it each time I used our car, and the mother bird soon became accustomed to the sound of the car door and the engine. She laid six eggs in the nest and sat very tight while incubating them. When the eggs hatched, I peeped excitedly into the nest to greet the new arrivals. On hearing me approach they immediately lifted their tiny heads and opened their beaks very wide, obviously expecting food from me. They had not yet developed enough discernment to recognise that I was not their mother!

It made me think that some Christians can be rather similar. They can be eager for any kind of spiritual experience and ready to receive whatever is on offer. Without discernment this can be dangerous, as they can open themselves up to deceptive practices and other spiritual powers.

There is much in the Bible to encourage us to hunger and thirst after God and His word. In fact it’s the hungry whom He has promised to fill with good things (Luke 1:53), and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness who will be filled (Matthew 5:6). But we need to be careful that we’re looking to Jesus, and to Him alone, to feed us spiritually. He says in today’s verse that whoever comes to Him will never go hungry. He’s the Bread of Life. It’s a strange paradox, however, that we need to continually hunger for Him, and then we will never be hungry!

If we yearn for comfort and nourishment from other sources (from relationships, from physical food or drink, from fulfilment in work or ministry, or even from spiritual experience), we’ll never be fully satisfied, and we may open ourselves up to other spiritual powers. We need to look to Jesus, and to Him alone, as the only One who can satisfy our soul. We also need to develop discernment, which comes from the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, to recognise what’s of Him and what’s not, so that we’re not like those baby birds opening their mouths to receive anything that’s passing!

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You that You’re the Bread of Life for me. Please feed me today and every day, and help me to develop the discernment to see what comes from You and what doesn’t. Amen.

Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. — Philippians 3:20

Thought

No matter what your passport says, if you are a Christian, there is no earthly country that can hold you, no borders that can claim, you and no flag that flies above you but Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven. You have more in common with the believing aboriginal tribesman of Indonesia, the Christian refugee in Africa, the Bedouin brother in Egypt, the Spirit-filled Brazilian housewife, the high rise business person in Hong Kong who bows to pray in Jesus name, than you do your next door neighbors if they don't know Christ as Lord and Savior.

Prayer

Glorious God and Almighty Father, I look forward to the day when people from every language, tribe, nation, and language join the angels and elders around your throne and worship you in joy forever. Make us one, if not here, then soon. We ask you Lord Jesus, please come. Amen.

A Restoration Project

"But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord."
Jeremiah 30:17a, NIV

I’ve recently been watching more TV than normal, due to a broken foot, and I was watching a programme called ‘Restoration Man’. An old folly was being rescued and rebuilt into a home. When they were looking at the windows, and the decorative brickwork around them, they discovered a big problem. What appeared to be beautiful and safe from a distance was actually in danger of breaking off. A Buddleia plant had seeded itself at the top of the window, and when it had been removed the brick arch had separated from the main brickwork. Not only could you get your hand in the crack, but your whole arm! Brick by brick it was dismantled, and carefully rebuilt by specialists. God spoke to me and said that’s what He loves to do.

God spoke to Jeremiah, who was really discouraged and fed up with all the persecution and abuse, ‘But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord’ (Jeremiah 30:17). And in the same way God longs to bring restoration into each of our lives. It can be a scary, long, and seemingly destructive process, as we’re dismantled, before being rebuilt. The roots of the Buddleia plant had done most of the damage, along with the rain and frost, and it’s often the stuff deep inside that causes so much damage in our lives. Only with God, and often He uses a godly prayer ministry team, can these problems and roots be discovered. It’s definitely worth the pain of facing the truth and reality in our lives and letting God reveal the roots of the problems. In that way we can experience deep peace and joy, as our relationship with God is reconstructed and restored, and as we receive the healing He can give us.

Prayer: Father God I’m willing to look at the hidden cracks in my life and let You come in, with Your patience, love and compassion to rebuild and restore my life. I need Your healing. Please take down the faulty and wrong beliefs and show me Your ways. Amen.

A Challenge for Fathers

A Challenge for Fathers

BIBLE MEDITATION:
"Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders." Proverbs 31:23

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Once a year we celebrate fathers. Maybe you are one. Let me give you a challenge.

One father said, "If I had it to do all over again, I'd love my wife more in front of my children. I'd laugh with my children more. I'd listen more, even to the youngest child. I'd be more honest about my own weaknesses and stop pretending perfection. I would pray differently for my children. I would be more encouraging and bestow more praise. And finally, if I had it to do all over again, I would use every ordinary thing that happened in every ordinary day to point them to God."

Praise God for the impact of godly fathers in our lives!

ACTION POINT:
If there's going to be music in marriage, the dad has to be the leader of the band. Celebrate the dad in your life today!

Wisdom and Innocence!

Wisdom and Innocence!

“Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil”
Romans 16;19, NIV

Paul’s letter to the Romans is an amazing exposition of the foundations of Christian truth, which we would do well to read at regular intervals throughout our Christian life. His teaching comes to us under the anointing of the Holy Spirit with the very power of God. In the last chapter he sends his greetings to many different believers and members of his wider family and right at the end he urges the Christians in Rome to keep away from those who put obstacles in the way of believers and who create division by bringing contrary teaching (Romans 15:17-18).

Then, in our verse for today he rejoices in the fact that the Roman Christians are famous for their obedience to the word of God, as it has been taught to them. The message of obedience is one that goes throughout Scripture – from Genesis to Revelation. Jesus himself said, “if you love me you will obey me.” (John 14:23). No wonder Paul rejoiced over the believers in Rome who had really understood that the key to knowing God’s blessings was to walk in obedience to His love.

What Paul said next speaks right into the day and age in which we live. Today we are growing up a generation who have little understanding of what is right and good and who have been robbed of their innocence at a very early age. Satan has so used the media and, even, our educational systems to destroy the very foundations that are so precious and which make for a lifetime of being able to live within the blessings of God.

When I read these words from Paul’s timeless messages to the Church contained within his letter, I found myself praying with renewed urgency for our children and grand-children – that there will be a renewed determination within the Body of Christ to protect them from the onslaughts of evil and that God will plant in their hearts a desire to know and live within the parameters of what is right and good. But what we pray for the next generations must also be our own desire – otherwise our prayers for the generations to come will be nullified by the hypocrisy of our own hearts!

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the amazing teaching Paul gave us in his letter to the Romans. Help me, Lord, to always desire that which is innocent, wise and good and to be diligent in my prayers for the coming generations who are growing up in a society that has blurred the boundaries of truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

All is Well

All is Well

"My heart says of you, 'Seek his face!' Your face, Lord, I will seek."

Psalm 27:8

Sometimes a good story says it all, like this one by Robert Louis Stevenson. The scene? A raging storm at sea. The story? The passengers in the ship became alarmed when the waves began to crash over the bow. Many of them thought for certain that the end had come.

Finally one passenger--against order--crept up on deck where the pilot was steering the churning vessel. There the pilot stood, strapped tightly to the wheel. He caught sight of the terror-stricken man and gave him a reassuring smile. At that point, the passenger backed down the steps, entered the hold of the ship, and announced to the others, "I have seen the face of the pilot and he smiled at me. All is well."

This story perfectly captures what our pilot is doing when powerful waves of trials crash around us. Oh, if we would only seek the reassuring smile of God, we would be calmed. He knows the way through the waves.
___________________________________

When the Spirit of Christ whispers to your troubled heart, "Seek his face," don't delay. This is what is called a prompting or a nudging of the Spirit. He is telling you what to do. Immediately say to Him in prayerful response, "Yes, Lord, I will seek you." And then, do just that: Seek Him in His Word through prayer. The peace that surpasses all understanding will be yours when you hear Him whisper, in return, "All is well."

Lord, help me to listen when Your Spirit reminds me to seek Your face during times of trouble. Too often I've failed to listen to Your promptings. I know that You are the Source of calm and peace in the midst of my trials. I praise You today for Your smile that reminds me, "All is well."

Don’t Let Fear Stop You

ViestiKirjoittaja Annukka » 18.06.2014 06:15

Don’t Let Fear Stop You

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”
(2 Timothy 1:7, NLT)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

God’s desire is that we continually progress, that we reach higher heights and go to new levels. Oftentimes, as soon as we make the decision to step out in faith and obey God, the enemy brings in fear to try to stop us. He’ll bring thoughts like, “What if you fail? What are other people going to think? You don’t have what it takes.” He’ll do his best to use fear to try to convince us to shrink back and stay where we are.

The Bible says that fear is a spirit. It plays on our emotions and holds us back. But the good news is that we have power over fear! The Bible says that perfect love casts out all fear. When we receive God’s perfect love, we will have confidence about the future because we know His plans are for our good. I’ve heard it said that fear is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real. Understand that fear is a lie. Today, choose to believe God’s Word and receive His love so that you can overcome fear and move forward into the good life He has prepared for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, thank You for taking me to new levels. I know You have equipped me with a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. Thank You for Your confidence as I renounce fear and press forward in victory in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Which Way Do I Go, Lord?

Which Way Do I Go, Lord?

"And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left."
Isaiah 30: 21, (Amp)

It has been quite a time of readjustment for me recently. My husband died just over two years ago, after forty two years of marriage, and I know the Lord has a new direction for me. Very shortly after he died, I heard the Lord say in my spirit the words of Jeremiah 29:11: ‘For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome’, so I have been waiting – and waiting!

I don’t want to give the impression that I am doing nothing, or that I am running around in all directions looking to see what I should be doing. I am learning, again, that the Lord doesn’t work in a hurry and that His time scale isn’t the same as ours. Life would be so simple if He lit up a huge neon sign over the right pathway, but it seldom happens like that. What I have been doing is waiting, trying to be patient, pushing gently at a few doors to see if they will open and then waiting some more. Nobody has come to view the house and friends keep asking if I am worried about that, but I can honestly say that I am not. Why would I want to leave this beautiful house where I have lived for 30 years in idyllic surroundings? I know that when the time comes it will be a huge wrench, but that too is in the Lord’s hands.

Is it easy being in a sort of limbo? No, it isn’t, but I am beginning to sense that things aren’t going to remain like this for much longer and there is a feeling of gradual detachment as the roots are getting ready to be pulled up.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your plans are best and You know the right time to put them into action. Please help me to wait patiently for Your perfect timing and to be ready for the new things You are doing in my life. Thank You that I can wait in trust, knowing that You know what is right for me. Amen.

At War with Spirits

At War with Spirits

"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

Ephesians 6:11-12

The problem with superstition in our age is not its force but its perceived folly. There are too many who laugh at the thought of evil spirits and demons in the air. Faith is meant for faith in things that are good like Jesus, heaven, the Holy Spirit, and miracles. Rarely do they consider believing in the existence of Satan and his hosts as having any practical impact.

Paul did not even argue the point of existence of evil and evil spirits. His focus of attention was on what we do about them. What should our response be to such a reality? Since the calendar says that today is Midsummer's Eve, should we have herbs of St. John before the dawn on the door as they used to do in New England?

No. That may be fine for pagans or New Agers, but Paul tells Christians to put on armor that, like the power of God and the schemes of the devil, is unseen. No dried herbs hung on the door today. No dried plants burned on the fire on June 24 or any other day. No. Paul tells us to put on armor that, like the power of God and the schemes of Satan, is unseen. Put on truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Holy Spirit. This is the only way to defeat the attacks of Satan.
____________________________________

Emotional fervor and tirades against the kingdom of Satan will not protect you. You would be talking to the wrong people. Talk instead with God. Listen to God. Demons scatter at such conversation.

Lord, my eyes cannot see the evil kingdom. So grant me Your vision to know that evil forces are real. Equip me with Your armor.

Thought

There is no hiding from God, but for those who willingly and joyously seek him, there is comfort, power, and hope in knowing his presence is ever with us.

Prayer

El Shaddai, God of the Mountains, be my source of strength as I seek your presence. I acknowledge your presence in all I do and everywhere I go. Please, don't just keep blessing me, but use me to bless others in your name. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
