Today's Verse for 03/26/2014

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him. — Philippians 1:29

Thought

When we read the book of Acts, we find the disciples overjoyed at suffering "for the sake of the name." Since Jesus has already victoriously passed through that kind of ordeal, we should consider it a privilege to share in his sufferings, not just a hardship. The truth of our commitment is often best shown to the skeptical when we are "under fire." So let's keep our character when under attack and rejoice, because we've seen in Jesus what happens when God's children are faithful even at the cost of their lives.

Prayer

What a precious name you have given to your son, O Lord. May it be exalted in all the earth and throughout all the heavens, until every heart knows that he is truly Lord. In Jesus name, and for his glory, I pray. Amen.

A Radical Reliance on Grace

Today's MP3
One day it dawned on me. I had become the very thing I hate: a hypocrite. A pretender. Two-faced. I’d written sermons about people like me. Christians who care more about their appearance than integrity. I knew what I needed to do. I’d written sermons about that, too.

1 John 1:8-9 says, “If we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, he will forgive our sins, because we can trust God to do what is right.”

I needed to confess. What is confession? Confession is not complaining. If I merely recite my problems and rehash my woes, I’m whining. Confession is a radical reliance on grace.

Maybe you need to do what I’ve done the last few days and confess. You just need to confess. God will hear your confession and you will find a wonder of God’s grace. You see, grace creates an honest confession and His great grace receives it!

Today's Verse for 03/28/2014

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men — the testimony given in its proper time. — 1 Timothy 2:5-6

Thought

We do not need to have another human, no matter how mighty, pious, or special, to intercede for us before God. As his children, we can go freely, knowing that God himself has provided the perfect mediator between himself and us. That mediator, alone, is head of the Church and Chief Priest before God on our behalf. His name is Christ Jesus, and he is our Lord, Savior and brother.

Prayer

O God, you are my God, and I praise you for making access to you so freely available. I know that if left to my own power, I would have no strength or righteous with which to approach you. Yet in your grace, you not only provided a ransom for my sin, but you also provided a mediator for my approach to you. Jesus, I thank you as well, for paying the price and staying at the Father's side to intercede and speak for me! Thank you, Jesus, for making this prayer known to the Father as I pray in your name. Amen.

Safe by Keeping the Law?

BIBLE MEDITATION:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
Suppose you’re driving down the road and a police officer stops you for running a red light. And you say to the officer, “I ran a red light, but you have no right to give me a ticket because I stopped at all the other streets and I have obeyed the speed limit.”

He responds, “Don’t tell me about all the things that you’ve done good. You’ve broken the law.”

If you think you’re going to be saved by keeping the law, then you must keep all of it, because God demands perfection. No amount of obedience can make up for one act of disobedience. If you keep the whole law and yet offend in one point you are guilty of it all.

ACTION POINT:
Read Romans 7:1 to 8:4. Can you relate to Paul’s quandary about keeping the law and the war within his members concerning its requirement of absolute obedience?

Righteousness! That's what we are. We are not righteous. No, it is much bigger than that. We are God's righteousness. We are the testimony of how holy, just and gracious he truly is because, in Jesus, we are his righteousness!

Prayer

Thank You, Almighty God, for making me righteous in the blood of your son's death. May people see in me, a reflection of your holiness, justice, and mercy as I try to share with them your grace. Through Jesus, your sacrifice for my sins I pray. Amen.

Sin Always Deceives, Always Destroys and is Always Discovere

Today's Free Devotional from Ellel Ministries International
Sin Always Deceives, Always Destroys and is Always Discovered.

"Search me O God and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting."
Psalm 139:23-24, NIV

David was a man after God’s own heart. He was a shepherd boy destined to rule God’s kingdom on earth. He went through an arduous preparation which would have tested the faith of many. Servant-hearted David came through and was finally installed as king of Israel. However, we shouldn’t always see David as a model. He’s far from perfect. He fell into the sin of adultery with Bathsheba and then murder (2 Samuel 11). This story is horrifying because it reminds us that we all have the potential to sin badly. He broke three of the ten commandments. In the beginning, David’s in the wrong place at the wrong time. David should have been leading his men in the war. He went from being the ‘hands on’ king of the people, who was a servant of the Lord, to an aloof king who sends off others to do his bidding.

What can we learn about sin from David’s downfall and subsequent restoration?
Sin always deceives - Satan is the deceiver and father of lies. Sin is the way to death and destruction.

Sin always destroys - One sin leads to lying as a cover up, leading to more lies, and in David’s case leading to murder. For all of us, choosing to sin puts a barrier between God and us, which lowers our sensitivity to sin. We eventually lose all self respect, reaching out to sources that will never bring the desired results. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that there is a sin (like pornography) that hurts no one. Sin ALWAYS destroys.

Sin is always discovered - Satan tempts us to believe that no one will ever know and that we can hide our sin. Satan’s so effective in this that many of us are even lying to ourselves, thinking that our sins are only known to us. Maybe we start to think like David, that we’ve succeeded in covering our tracks. God sees everything. It’s laid before His eyes and God won’t be mocked. There’s a window of opportunity to repent, but after that sin is always discovered.

Confessed sin is always forgiven - God never turns His ear away. Even all David’s sin wasn’t unforgivable. God always listens. We need to deal with any hidden sins. Ask someone to hold you accountable.

Sin always deceives, always destroys and is always discovered.

When God shows you the sin of your heart, confess it and know the joy of living a life which is blameless before Him. Confessed sin is always forgiven by the blood of Jesus.

Prayer:| Father God, thank You for the revelation of Your word. Thank You that Your truth is eternal. Open our hearts and ears to hear and help us to gain this insight today into the reality of the power of sin, but also the wonderful power over sin You give us in salvation. Thank You for forgiving my sin today as I confess it to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

"You Did It for Me"

ViestiKirjoittaja Annukka » 30.03.2014 19:26

Joni and Friends Daily Devotional March 30, 2014

"You Did It for Me"

"Then the King will say, 'I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you thirsty and give you something to drink?' The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'" Matthew 25:34-40

The year is A.D. 33. It's late on a stormy Friday afternoon, and I am standing on a rugged hill by a trash heap outside Jerusalem. I huddle with a group of women just a few yards from the cross. Large drops of rain begin to pelt the dust, and I clutch at my head shawl, wiping away tears and rain.

I cannot take my eyes off Jesus. His body is ramrod stiff, covered with caked dirt and blood, back arched, near death, yet hands stretched and fingers splayed. Jesus' head bobs against the crossbar and He groans, "I thirst."

I step out of the group and cock my ear. Did Jesus say He was... thirsty? A soldier, half-drunk, cracks off a stock of hyssop, spears a sponge and, after soaking it in sour wine, laughs and thrusts it into His face.

I am horrified. Wait. Don't give Him wine gone acidic. This is the Lord who is asking for a drink. O, God, if only I had a jug of fresh spring water! But history is written. I am helpless to do anything.
_____________________________________

It is this year. It is late on a stormy afternoon. You drive by a nursing home, recalling a community notice mentioning the need for more dinnertime volunteers at the home.

Jesus said that when we meet the needs of our neighbors, we have ministered personally to Him. Hurting people are our neighbors. History can be rewritten -- we can still give the Lord that drink.

Preferential Treatment

Preferential Treatment

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life…”
(Psalm 30:5, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Most of the time, we think, “Oh, God’s got bigger things to deal with than me. He’s not interested in what’s bothering me.” No, you are God’s biggest deal. He wants to make you an example of His goodness. When you keep God first place, when you honor Him with your life, God puts something on you that causes you to stand out from the crowd; something that gives you an advantage. It causes good breaks and opportunities to be attracted to you. It’s called the favor of God!

The word “favor” means “to assist, to provide with advantages, to receive preferential treatment.” The favor of God will cause you to be promoted even though you weren’t the most qualified. God’s favor will cause your children to get the best teachers in school. It will help you find the best deals at the mall. It will put you at the right place at the right time. God is saying to you what He said to Abraham, “I’m going to assist you. I’m going to provide you with advantages. I’m going to cause you to receive preferential treatment.” Believe it and receive it for today and all the days of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life. I believe and receive Your promise. I trust that You are working behind the scenes and opening doors of favor in every area of my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Could You Be Distracted?

"Then he said to him ‘come home with me and eat bread’."
1 Kings 13:15, NIV

This seemingly simple verse comes near the end of a story about an unnamed ‘man of God’, who was sent from Bethel to Jerusalem to deliver a very clear warning message from God. He had been given instructions by God for the whole trip. He was to stay focussed, deliver the message, not eat or drink with the people, and not to go and return along the same route.

Now the king of Judah, Jeroboam, was standing by the altar when the prophet arrived and spoke out the challenge from God. The king became angry and stretching out his hand he ordered the guards to arrest him. But immediately his hand withered and the altar beside him crumbled, as God had said it would, as a sign that the message was from God. The king was desperate and begged the prophet to `entreat the Lord, your God` to bring healing to his hand. This the prophet did, and when his hand was restored the king offered him hospitality. But mindful of the mission directives the prophet declined all the king`s offers. He stayed focussed on his instruction and set off, choosing an alternative route home. That`s when the story took a dramatic turn.

It`s amazing how often, when we feel we have got it right and done just what God asked of us, we become our most vulnerable. It was at this point in the story that the ‘man of God’ got distracted; just when he was doing so well. He had delivered the message, and God had demonstrated His great authority and power by destroying the altar and then healing the king`s withered hand. Now, probably feeling that the job was done, the man of God was on his return to Bethel. I wonder if his guard was down because he was on the homeward strait.

Just then an old prophet came to speak to him and asked him to come back to his home to eat with him. At first the younger man refused, but when the old prophet pressed him, and even lied, saying that the instructions came by an angel from God, he was persuaded to go with him. Could it be that the old prophet wanted to lead him astray because he was jealous of his obvious anointing? His sons had told him of the amazing happenings in Jerusalem that day. We will never know but, believing this older prophet, the younger man went back to his house to eat and drink with him. He forgot that his clear instructions were for the whole journey, there and back to Bethel.

They ate together, but then God spoke again. He was not at all pleased that His instructions had been overridden and that the `man of God` had not completed the whole assignment. There would be a consequence, as there always is when we step out of God’s covering. Later in the same chapter, in verse 24, we learn what happened The old prophet saddled a donkey for the ‘man of God’ to ride home but, we read, `when he was gone, a lion met him on the road and killed him`. What a terrible end to an amazing story of a man of God.

The moral of this tale is clear. If God gives you some clear instructions, then don’t let yourself be distracted, however plausible the reasoning from others may seem. We must remember that we too can be vulnerable, if we are distracted from God’s instructions. Every day, if we don`t stay on track with God, we are vulnerable because `our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour` (1 Peter 5:8).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to remain focussed on the instructions You`ve given me for my walk today, and to carry out the tasks diligently that you set before me. I don’t want to be distracted from Your safe path. Help me too, Lord, never to be the agent of distraction, drawing others off their godly path, with my own soulish reasoning. I pray this in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

Thought

At one time or another, most of us raised an angry fist to fate and cursed the darkness. Each of these actions is about as equally effective. But to deny there is a God is something else altogether. To rob heaven of God is to rob ourselves of grace, hope, and future. How foolish indeed to forget that behind a Creation of wonder, order, variety, beauty, power, and pattern is the Creator. He is far greater than his handiwork and we dare not ignore, deny, or dismiss him.

Prayer

O Lord God Almighty, Creator and Sustainer, thank you for not only being there, but being with me today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
