5. Yazidis Commit Mass-Suicide After Rape by Islamic State Fighters

by Ari Soffer

Yazidi Women Being Systematically Raped in Iraq

In yet another harrowing chapter in the tragic plight of Iraq's Kurdish Yazidi population, eyewitnesses have described how girls raped by Muslim fighters from the "Islamic State" (formerly ISIS) committed suicide en-mass after returning to their families, as evidence of systematic rape by Islamists against non-Muslims continue to surface.

Among the tens of thousands of Yazidi refugees trapped in the Shingal mountains while fleeing IS's deadly advance through Iraq, several survivors told Kurdish Rudaw TV how a group of three girls were returned after being abducted and raped - only to hurl themselves off a cliff after being traumatized by their ordeal.

A Kurdish reporter said the mother of one of the girls had given an interview in front of the camera, but claimed Kurdish fighters from the YPG militia had seized the camera and erased the interview - possibly in an attempt to avoid sowing panic.

The mother reportedly told of how in their desperation the girls begged other refugees to kill them, but when no one would comply they killed themselves.

The YPG is the dominant Kurdish force in Syria and has taken control of some areas across the border in Iraq since IS swept away Iraqi forces earlier in the summer. It has been credited with putting up a stiff resistance against Islamist forces and helping to save many Yazidi and Christian refugees, but has also criticized as authoritarian by its opponents.

Another woman said she also witnessed what happened to the girls.

"They [IS] took the girls by force and raped them, and after they returned they killed themselves," she said.

Some Kurds say the systematic rape of Yazidi women is yet more evidence of no less than a genocide against their people by IS.

As the Islamic State rampages through northern Iraq, witnesses say they have made a point of slaughtering any men who refuse to convert to Islam, and taking women and children as slaves. In one incident on Friday, 80 Yazidi men were executed and around 100 women and children kidnapped in the tiny Yazidi village of Kojo in northern Iraq.

The Yazidi religion is indigenous to Kurdistan, and Yazidis themselves are ethnically-Kurdish. But unlike many other Kurds, they largely avoided intermarriage with surrounding Arab tribes and thus a many of them maintained a strikingly fair "Aryan" complexion, with blond hair and blue eyes. By raping their women, IS fighters "complement" the slaughter and forced-conversions of the Yazidis by impregnating them and breaking their bloodline, according to one leading Kurdish activist.

"The Kurds and Yazidis are originally Aryans. But because the Yazidis are such a closed community they have retained a fairer complexion, blonder hair and bluer eyes. They don't marry non-Yazidis," Adnan Kochar, chairman of the Kurdish Cultural Centre in London, explained to the Daily Mail.

"ISIS have taken around 300 women from Sinjar to give to jihadists to marry and make pregnant to have a Muslim child. If they can't kill all Yazidis, they will try to smash the blond bloodline," he said.

It comes as Kurdish Peshmerga forces, aided by US airstrikes, have reportedly made gains and are advancing on the strategically-important Mosul Dam, which was seized by IS on August 7.

Many Yazidi men have enlisted to Peshmerga forces to help push back the Islamists and reclaim their homeland from IS's self-styled "Caliphate".

Yazidi Refugee Stresses the World Must Help Iraqi Kurdistan

INTERVIEW: Yazidi Refugee Stresses the World Must Help Iraqi Kurdistan

A Yazidi refugee from Iraqi Kurdistan called upon the international community to come to their aid. He stressed that if ISIS is not stopped and his people are not spared from genocide, ISIS will take over more regions, spreading their terror to other places.

ISIS terrorists

Dakhil Shammo, a journalist for Voice of America and a Yazidi refugee from Iraqi Kurdistan, stressed that the humanitarian situation within his country is horrendous: “We consider it as a kind of genocide happening against our people.” ISIS is slaughtering Yazidis en masse because the Islamists consider them to be devil worshippers.

However, Shammo stressed that this is a false conception: “Yazidis are a Kurdish people, but their religion is Azadi. It’s a religion that believes in one G-d and respects seven angels. The head of the angels is Tawus Malek. It’s a religion that goes back to natural elements. The sun is an important element. Historically, their roots go back to Zoroastrianism.”

According to Shammo, “The Arab writers and scholars re-write history as they like, not as it is. Whenever they intended to mock and kill Yazidi people, they called Yazidis devil worshippers because it is a religion that respects the nature. In our religious history, there were 72 genocides that happened against Yazidis.”

It appears that once again, genocide is happening as we speak against Yazidis. According to Shammo, “In the last week, one thousand people were killed. A thousand were abducted, especially women. They were sold in the black market. More than a half million Yazidis are displaced.”

He stressed that the crisis is not confined to the Sinjar Mountains: “The people are terrified because of this terrorist group that is killing children and elderly people, enslaving women for jihadi sex and selling them in the black market as slaves. Last Friday, they murdered more than 300 men, from age 11 and up. They took all of the women of the villages in Mosul area and we don’t know what happened to them. In the last few weeks, reports confirmed that they sold women in other areas.”

Shammo stressed that the assistance the US is sending to Iraq is insufficient: “It is so urgent to prevent the mass killing of Yazidis. They should prevent that from happening. Everybody knows that it is not only the Yazidis. Also the Christians and other minorities are targets for the terrorists in the region. Therefore, we think we need a secure region moderated by the US. There should be some effort to fight ISIS in a real way, to eliminate them and drive them from that region.”

Shammo emphasized that the Yazidis don’t trust the Iraqi and Kurdish forces to come to their rescue: “They don’t trust Barzani to protect them. They did not fight ISIS. They left the region and the civilians have no way to protect themselves. There should be international forces to secure the region. Security is needed with forces that we trust. Otherwise, the people cannot return to their villages and towns.”

According to Shammo, there is no excuse for not fighting ISIS: “There are people with their personal weapons fighting ISIS. So how come organized forces cannot fight? With the American forces, they are fighting for the strategic dam and Kirkuk. They are not willing to protect the Yazidis. Today, there are no Christians in their towns and villages. They cannot go back. No one protects them. All Yazidis and Christians from Mosul are out of the region. They are living in the streets abroad and in the surrounding areas.”

The plight of the refugees is very dire: “About a million people in total are displaced. Everywhere you go, you can find three or four families under one tree. Lucky people find a backyard belonging to people. There are very few tents. There are thousands of people without food and water. Thousands more are under the control of ISIS. There should be someone to free the women under ISIS control. They will be taken to Arab countries and sold. There should be someone to prevent it. Obama’s assessment didn’t give the full picture. There are still many people who need international aid.”

Shammo concluded by stressing that for the Yazidis, it is either conversion to Islam or death. But even conversion is not a feasible escape from their plight: “ISIS asked Yazidis and Christians to convert to Islam. When you declare your Muslim, then they force you to wage jihad and to give your daughters for jihadi sex. Even if you convert to Islam, they took them into jihad to fight their families and they took the women for jihad. Today, they are controlling this region. Tomorrow, they will control another. They are a global threat.” He stressed that the world must take action against them, so their influence won’t expand further

Missiles over Jerusalem - a first-person account

Missiles over Jerusalem - a first-person account

by Rabbi Abraham Cooper, SWC Associate Dean

24 hours ago, almost everyone in Cairo, Jerusalem, and Ramallah, thought they had a deal for a long-range truce in Gaza. Just before midnight, Tuesday, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Wiesenthal Center Associate Dean experienced up close and personal what a promise from Hamas means.

Cooper, along with his wife and Ehud Yaari, Israel TV’s leading expert on Arab affairs had just pulled up to an apartment house in Jerusalem where the Coopers are staying. Suddenly the alarm rang out across the city. Rabbi Cooper joined the others in jumping out of the car and hugged a low wall for about four minutes. Just as the sirens went silent a massive boom could be heard, the Iron Dome intercepted a rocket headed towards a neighborhood somewhere in Jerusalem or adjacent Beit Shemesh.

“For nine years Israelis have had to put up with this? No country can survive when an entire section of its population centers has its daily routines upended. While they don’t want to do it, it appears only IDF action, not empty words of a terror group can definitively knock out Hamas’ military/terror capabilities. Then just maybe the people of Gaza can rebuild their civilian infrastructure under complete transparency and outside control and Israelis in the South can get back their lives.

Fatah + Hamas = Quite the same!

Police on High Alert as Hamas and Fatah Call for Terror Attacks against Civilians

Rocket fire and calls for terror throughout country by both Hamas and Fatah prompt emergency deployment of thousands of police officers.

Police Comissioner Yohanan Danino has ramped up police presence throughout Israel to full force Wednesday in light of increased rocket fire on the South and Hamas’s breaching of a temporary truce.

Thousands of police deployed across the country will continue to work to maintain public safety and public order, Danino said.

“The deployment will be adjusted according to new developments,” he said. “The Israel police is prepared for any possible scenario.”

More than 100 rockets were fired since Hamas violated a six-day ceasefire Tuesday evening; the IDF conducted airstrikes on 80 terror targets throughout Gaza in retaliation.

Danino’s declaration surfaces as Hamas and Fatah have both issued calls for their followers to attack Israeli civilians and security forces in Judea and Samaria, as well as throughout Israel, in solidarity with Gaza-based terrorists.

Earlier Wednesday, a stabbing attack against an IDF soldier was thwarted in Samaria, at a checkpoint near Shechem (Nablus).

B'Tselem Condemns Hamas Executions

ViestiKirjoittaja Annukka » 24.08.2014 19:37

5. B'Tselem Condemns Hamas Execution of 'Collaborators'

by Shlomo Pitriokovski

Left-wing NGO B'Tselem released a statement condemning the execution of more than 20 people in Gaza by Hamas in a matter of days.

The men were publicly executed for being "collaborators", a term used to describe anyone thought to have cooperated with Israel.

The killings followed the assassination of three senior Hamas leaders on Thursday in an Israeli Air Force strike, which is said to have seriously shaken the Islamist terror group and triggered something of a witch hunt to discover how Israel had obtained precise information on their whereabouts at a time of war.

B'Tselem claimed that according to the data available to them, since last Thursday (21 August) - the same day the Hamas leaders were killed - 25 people had been executed by Hamas, seven of whom were shot publicly in Gaza City's central square.

It is unclear what kind of a trial, if any, the accused received.

In a statement released Sunday, B'Tselem said the "current circumstances prevailing in the Gaza Strip" prevented it from carrying out a full investigation, including the precise number of victims or their identities.

In any event, the statement continued, "International humanitarian law totally forbids any state or organization from executing people without a trial... Acts like these are a severe violation of international law."

The statement went on to condemn the death penalty as "immoral" under any circumstances, and called on Hamas to use other methods to punish wrongdoers.

B'Tselem's statement follows calls by a right-wing NGO for the US to take action over the spate of killings.

The Legal Forum for Israel submitted a letter to Washington's Ambassador to Israel, requesting "that your government act to put an end to the wave of executions in Gaza."
